Hyde Park (Leeds)
In Leeds, Hyde Park is an inner-city district north-west of the centre, popular with students, and the name of its green space and its historic Hyde Park Picture House cinema - not the London park. The confusion is common enough that locals always add "in Leeds" when talking to outsiders.
In practice
The neighbourhood lies between the University of Leeds and Headingley, with streets of Victorian terraced and back-to-back houses, many shared by students. Its green space, Woodhouse Moor - often called Hyde Park - is used for sport, barbecues and festivals. The Hyde Park Picture House, opened in 1914, is one of the oldest working cinemas in Britain and still has gas lighting in its auditorium.
Why it matters to newcomers
If a colleague says they live "in Hyde Park", they mean this part of Leeds. It is lively, affordable and close to the universities, but noisy during term. The Picture House is worth a visit for its independent film programme.
